Keanu Reeves' Directorial Debut 'Man of Tai Chi' Gets Greenlight
Madonna has signed with Interscope, a source close to the situation confirmed to Billboard.biz Wednesday morning (Dec. 14).our editor recommendsMadonna Performing at Super Bowl: What the Pundits are SayingIt's Official: Madonna Will Perform During Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show (Video)New Movie Reviews: 'New Year's Eve,' 'Young Adult,' Madonna's 'W.E.' Hitting Theaters Official: Van Halen Signs With Interscope Records According to a report in the NY Post, the singer will continue the 10-year multi-rights deal with Live Nation -- said to be worth as much as $100 million -- that she signed in 2007, but has inked a three-album pact with Interscope at a base of $1 million per album. Billboard.biz's source could not confirm the terms of the deal at press time but said the report sounded right. Sources indicated to Billboard early last month that Madonna was likely to ink with Interscope. Madonna left Warner Bros., her label home of 25 years, after the release of her 2008 album Hard Candy. Her subsequent Live Nation-produced "Sticky & Sweet" tour grossed $408 million worldwide, according to Billboard Boxscore, highest ever for a female artist. While she is signed with Live Nation, the company's CEO Irving Azoff reiterated to Billboard in February that it would partner with some other entity in releasing Madonna's next album. Executives at the firm have stated repeatedly that they don't intend to enter the record business full-tilt. "Live Nation, prior to the merger, entered into some of these all-rights deals, so there are certain artists, Madonna being one of them, that there is a recorded music strategy," Azoff said. "Once she gets the album recorded, we'll sit down with her and her manager Guy Oseary and figure out what's best for the record. It has to start with the music." Azoff said Madonna would begin recording the album as soon as she finished work on her directing debut, W.E, a look at the scandalous love affair between Wallis Simpson and Britain's King Edward VIII, which is out early next year. A rough version of a ballad called "Masterpiece," reportedly from the film and her forthcoming album, leaked last week. Also last week, it was confirmed that Madonna will be performing during halftime at the Super Bowl on February 5 in Indianapolis. A different song, "Give Me All Your Love," leaked last month and Madonna teased the crowd about it during a Smirnoff event in NY last month, but stopped short of playing it. Last week, M.I.A. let it slip that she, Madonna and Nicki Minaj were working on a new song together. Theron Reveals Monstrously Funny Side in 'Adult'
NY (AP) Jason Reitman was under the same impression many are of Charlize Theron. He knew she was a fiercely talented actress, prone to burying her stunning beauty behind gritty, intense performances like her Academy Award-winning one as a murderous prostitute in 2003's "Monster."Then she told him a dirty joke.Theron approached Reitman at last year's Oscars to tell him how much she liked his then recent film "Up in the Air" and that she'd love to work with him."I got a tap on the shoulder and I turn around and it's all 6'6" of Charlize Theron," recalls Reitman, intentionally exaggerating Theron's height by eight inches. "I was really understandably intimated."But when Theron, already a few drinks into the night, revealed a more depraved sense of humor than her image would suggest, Reitman realized they had more in common than he expected: "I was like, 'Oh! I like you.'" (Theron, for her part, doesn't recall the joke, but, with a glimmer in her eye, acknowledged, "That sounds about correct.")The meeting was both fortuitous, in that it directly led to Theron staring in Reitman's new film "Young Adult," and an early hint to the tone of their collaboration. In "Young Adult" (which was penned by Diablo Cody of "Juno"), Theron plays Mavis Gary, a teen fiction ghost writer who returns to her hometown in rural Minnesota to lure her now-married former boyfriend. As a woman whose nostalgia has swelled to demented proportions, Theron is bitingly caustic and hilariously candid. The performance not only reveals Theron's comedic side, but shows more of her true nature than her previous work. Not that Theron is anything like Mavis' more deplorable aspects, but she shares Mavis' sharp elbows and sharper wit."Most people who know me who have seen the film are not that shocked," Theron said in a recent interview during which she was self-deprecating, unguardedly foul-mouthed and thoughtful. "The film is way more my personality and closer to anything that I've done."It's also Theron's first film in nearly three years. In between, she prepared to star in an ambitious "Mad Max" sequel, "Fury Road," which was repeatedly delayed and still hasn't been shot. She worked on developing projects with her production company, including a drama series for HBO with David Fincher. She also split with the Irish actor Stuart Townsend after nearly a decade together."I'll be very honest: I wasn't missing it," Theron says of acting. "It's hard to miss something when nothing was kind of sparking that instrument to get excited about."That period, though, appears to be over. Following "Young Adult" which is earning Theron her best reviews since "Monster" she'll be seen in Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" and the fantasy "Snow White & the Huntsman," which also stars Kristen Stewart.Theron, 36, grew up on a farm outside Johannesburg, South Africa. While she was a teenager, her mother shot and killed Theron's alcoholic and abusive father. When she was 16, she became a model in Milan. She later moved to NY to train as a ballet dancer, but a knee injury pushed her out of dance and toward acting. After a number of small roles as girlfriend types in films such as "The Devil's Advocate" and "The Cider House Rules," her performance in "Monster" changed her trajectory considerably. When she won best actress at the Oscars, Nelson Mandela hailed her for putting South Africa "on the map."Since then, Theron, who lives in Los Angeles, received a second Oscar nomination for her performance as a miner in "North Country." Though the science fiction "Aeon Flux" bombed, Theron drew acclaim again for a supporting role in the somber anti-war film "In the Valley of Elah" and for the atypical superhero film "Hancock."But all the while, there were hints in her filmography of comedic leanings. In 2005, she had a memorable arc on "Arrested Development" as the love interest of Jason Bateman's character. Her character was mentally disabled, but the joke was on those around her, who didn't notice because of her British accent. The opportunity arose when "Monster" director Patty Jenkins directed an episode of the series, and Theron asked her to relay to creator Mitch Hurwitz her pleading to be on the show. She calls the experience a "great, great learning experience" in how comedy needn't be played for comedy, but rather portrayed realistically.Theron also appeared on an early episode of Zach Galifianakis' faux-interview Web series "Between Two Ferns," as revered of a comedy calling-card as there is. On it, Theron flirted with Galifianakis before pulling the rug out from him, cackling at the idea of her being attracted to a "fat garden gnome.""The bizarre thing is that I've always had kind of a sick, twisted sense of humor," says Theron. "But my work, for some reason, has always veered to the dramatic stuff. I think that's because I've never really been that driven by genre, but I find that I want to play people that feel real. I do think in comedy it's harder to find non-caricatures. I always said that I would love to do something like that kind of comedy that the Coen brothers do, that more character study stuff. And that stuff is hard to come by, and I feel like my career was setting itself up to be another thing."The comedian-actor Patton Oswalt, who plays an old high school acquaintance of Mavis' who turns into a drinking buddy in "Young Adult," said at the Gotham Awards that Theron "has the kind of humor that someone who looks like me has."The two found an unlikely chemistry in "Young Adult" right from the start. Before ever meeting, they did a table read in Reitman's dining room and immediately connected."I realized I was going to be working with a really great actor," says Oswalt. "It made me work even harder so that I could be on her playing field. She is so instinctual and already ready to go every shot."Whether it's "Monster" or "Hancock" or "Young Adult," Theron typically commits fully to a character. Asked how she manages that, she doesn't miss a beat: "Alcohol."But thinking a little more about it, she says that ballet instilled in her a relish for performance. Though she acknowledges she's not a trained actor, she says she learned from other actors as her career unfolded."It was amazing to watch Al Pacino at 3 in the morning and suck ... and then be brilliant," says Theron, recalling "The Devil's Advocate." ''It was one of the greatest teachings that I could have been given. He taught me that in order to be great, you have to be willing to fall on your face. Why Roger Ebert Sits in the Back Row
“‘I’ve noticed that the publicists have started to sit behind me,” [Gene Siskel] explained. ‘I think they’re supposed to spy on my reactions and report back to the studios.’ I doubted this was true, but now I became aware of Siskel sitting behind me, possibly to spy on my reactions. So I moved to the back row to outwit the son of a bitch. I picked the end of the row nearest the door, so I could sneak out to the men’s room without calling undue attention to myself. Most people have bladders the size of oil drums, but I usually have to pee at least once during a movie. A few of my colleagues share this need, and I am sympathetic while watching them bend over and make a Groucho Marx run in front of the screen in the futile hope that no one will notice them.” You relate, right? Occupy Los Angeles: Hundreds of Protesters Planning to Defy Midnight Eviction
This story first appeared in the Dec. 2 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsFrom 'The Artist' to 'War Horse,' 23 Awards Contenders That Prominently Feature Animals (Photos)The Making of 'The Artist''The Artist' Star Berenice Bejo to Wear Her 1920s Costumes on Red CarpetsHow Rin Tin Tin Ruined Any Oscar Shot for 'The Artist's' Jack RussellMichel Hazanavicius, the Artist Behind 'The Artist,' On the Great Crowd-Pleaser (Video) Somehow, Michel Hazanavicius managed to come up with something that even the French thought was loopy. For years, the Parisian writer-director -- an analytical guy who sees filmmaking as what he calls "playing with codes" -- had been captivated by an idea. But financiers got cold feet just hearing about it; the boutique television stations that typically fund sophisticated European films walked away. Even in a nation of cineastes and revival houses -- a country in which a major film movement was once launched by a band of movie critics -- his dream looked to be dead on arrival. PHOTOS: The Making of 'The Artist' "I wanted to make one for a long time," the director says about his fascination with doing a black-and-white silent set in the 1920s. His long limbs folded over a table at the Four Seasons Beverly Hills, he talks about his heroes like F.W. Murnau and Fritz Lang. "But it's even difficult to convince myself, or to convince anyone else, it is even possible. I found that some producers -- really all of them -- were a little bit cold." It didn't help that the 44-year-old Hazanavicius was known in France for the box-office-friendly, period-conscious OSS 117 spy parodies, in which a kind of Gallic Bond scampers through the 1950s and '60s. "What I needed was a crazy guy," he says. Enter Thomas Langmann, 40, whom Hazanavicius calls "the craziest producer in France." Langmann, the son of Oscar winner Claude Berri (who directed Manon of the Spring and produced Roman Polanski's Tess), worked a bit with Soderbergh and Coppola as a young man and produced some French smashes in his 30s. Langmann sees producing as a species of gambling. "It was always about betting on directors," he says of the philosophy his father passed down. "I knew if we made a film in black and white and we succeeded, it would be original." It took director and producer awhile to sync up -- early ideas such as a feature with an invisible protagonist didn't make the cut. "I really wanted to make an entertaining movie," Hazanavicius says, noting that many European silents were tragic romances. "I thought it was unfair to ask people to come to a black-and-white silent movie that was also dark -- it would be too much." But finally the two came up with an idea that worked: a film about a '20s matinee idol who struggles with the advent of talkies. PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes of our Directors Roundtable Photo Shoot With Michel Hazanavicius The movie that resulted is being talked about as the first silent film with real best-picture Oscar chances since Wings, the 1927 Clara Bow film that arrived soon before the talkies changed the game (it won). The Artist opened in the U.S. on Nov. 25 -- just two screens each in NY and Los Angeles -- but already has banked an impressive $12 million since its release in France in October. More important, the film took the best actor award at Cannes, where it played to rapturous audiences, and it has gone on to seduce judges at festivals around the world and sweep the season's audience awards from Chicago to the Hamptons to San Sebastien. "It is as wonderful a film as it is modern," says silent-film collector and producer Serge Bromberg, who has seen the movie six times at festivals, "with jaw-dropping cinematography, good acting, wonderful knowledge of classic cinema. And it has the flavor of the old. But it is not a film of the '20s; the pace is not the same, and its constant humor gives it some distance from what a film of the '20s would be." Hazanavicius was already an admirer of the silent era, but as he wrote, he immersed himself deeply for several months, reading actors' biographies, going to screenings of Murnau and Frank Borzage and early John Ford at Paris' Cinematheque, studying photographs and playing music of the '20s and early '30s. STORY: 'The Artist' Star Berenice Bejo to Wear Her 1920s Costumes on Red Carpets He wanted Jean Dujardin -- a bankable French star known mostly for comic roles -- to play the lead, Valentin. "Of course, I said: 'You're crazy. It's impossible,' " says Dujardin. Hazanavicius also asked his girlfriend, Berenice Bejo, the Argentina-born French actress who appeared in A Knight's Tale and in his OSS films, to play a studio extra named Peppy, shot into fame by a chance encounter. "I said, 'No way -- no way,' " recalls Bejo, who has two children with the director. "Not with me." The two eventually were persuaded, and their presence caused a change in the movie itself. The original vision for the film focused on Valentin's isolation. But as Hazanavicius got deeper into the film, Peppy began to seem major, and the movie became a romance. Dujardin had only ever scratched the era's surface. "I knew only the masterpieces of Keaton and Chaplin," he says. "It was a real discovery for me to find King Vidor's The Crowd," a film about a man lost in the big city of the 1920s that the actor calls "very modern, very touching; it helped me to assemble all the different references." PHOTOS: It's a Zoo This Season: 23 Awards Contenders Featuring Animals As a model for his character, he found Douglas Fairbanks -- the actor who started making films in 1915 and whose career faded as talkies ascended. "In all his films," Dujardin says, "he doesn't ask himself any questions," never straining against the limits of the swashbuckling style required by such films as Robin Hood and The Mark of Zorro. "It's pathetic when you know the talkies are coming, but he's also very generous. He's like my character George Valentin: He can be arrogant, but he has integrity. He believes in his art. He fights for it." (Valentin needs that integrity -- as he spirals downward, it's all he has, besides liquor and an attentive, scene-stealing dog to keep him warm.) Bejo's research found inspiration in Gloria Swanson -- who, unlike Fairbanks, excelled after the silent era. She fell for Swanson's autobiography, which describes a life very different from the desiccated former star she played in Sunset Boulevard. "She started in the silent period and then went to the talkies and then to TV," Bejo says. "I got a sense of the atmosphere of the period." To make a film about Hollywood, Langmann reasoned, you had to shoot there. By now he'd drawn some funding from French station Canal+ and invested considerably from his own company, La Petite Reine. But the costs of coming to America -- and surrendering French government subsidies -- raised the stakes substantially. (The film's eventual budget came close to $20 million.) STORY: 'The Artist': The Not-So-Silent Entry Shooting at the Paramount and Warner Bros. lots -- as well as locations like the beautifully lit center court of downtown L.A.'s 1893 Bradbury Building, known to film buffs for its role in Blade Runner -- inspired the crew over the 35-day shoot. (Dujardin was put up in an old house in the Hollywood Hills -- he thinks to amplify his isolation for his slide in the movie's second act.) "Hollywood, in my opinion, is the big star of the movie," says Hazanavicius. Also crucial to re-creating the era onscreen was the work of costume designer Mark Bridges, who worked on all of Paul Thomas Anderson's films, including Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood. Some of his vision for The Artist came from the MGM documentary 1925 Studio Tour. "You could see what the carpenters, what the plasterers wore," he says. "Even those guys in their bib overalls had a necktie. And a lot of hats, either for warmth or bad hair days." Surprisingly, director of photography Guillaume Schiffman shot the film in color because today's black and white is too sharp, not grainy enough. He used unusual filters to diffuse the whites and mute the blacks slightly -- and as the film went on, with its main character losing some of his sheen, the light got grayer. Although Hazanavicius deliberately had chosen very expressive actors -- Americans John Goodman, James Cromwell and Penelope Ann Miller round out the cast -- they found the limitations were difficult at first. For Bejo, working without lines threw her off. (The actors improvised in English while onscreen, to give their mouths something to do, mixed with a few of the "lines" shown to the audience on intertitles.) But she eventually found a way to inhabit the role. "If it was a talking movie, she would have been the same -- would have moved the same way, winked the same way, danced the same way," she says. "The challenge was to try to focus on the body language, but the rest of it was finding a way of being an American actress. I think of American actors -- they take up a lot of space, they talk really loud, they talk with their hands. So I had to find that, since being a French actor, everything is more petite." STORY: How 'The Artist's' Fashions Are Impacting the Red Carpet To keep communing with the past, the director kept the music of the era -- George Gershwin, Cole Porter -- in constant rotation while they shot, and he brought cast and crew to see films at the Silent Movie Theatre on Fairfax, and to the Nuart for its revival of Murnau's Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (a morality tale about the corrupting influence of the city Murnau made for Fox in 1927) . The director applied some of what he learned: Murnau, for instance, had instructed his protagonist from Sunrise to wear heavy, weighted shoes on set after he fell on hard times; Hazanavicius did something similar when he dressed his fallen star in suits slightly too big for him. "He's not as perfect as he was in the first act," he says. Hazanavicius credits the world's fascination with Hollywood for the film's international appeal, but the enormous enthusiasm of Harvey Weinstein is the reason it has exploded out of the gates during the festival season into the awards race. Weinstein, who had enjoyed the OSS films, had heard about the movie from Langmann and in March flew to Paris, where he saw the film alone in a screening room. Weinstein was not ambiguous in his praise. The Artist, he says now, "treasures the American cinema I love. It's an inspiration, everything about the movie -- where they shot the movie, the way they used American cast and crew. It's just a love letter to American cinema." Langmann was impressed with Weinstein's urge to pull the trigger without any associates along to vet the decision. It was still months before Cannes -- it was not even assured at this point that the film would be released in France -- but by the time of the festival, the deal to distribute in the U.S., the U.K. and other regions was done. The film ends with a tap dance that required more work than anything else in the film. "I think 95 percent of the preparation was for the tap dancing," Hazanavicius says. Bejo recalls her practice with both pleasure and exasperation: "Five months, every day." The film was shot in as close to real sequence as possible -- in part to give the actors time to learn to tap dance, and partly so they would travel the same journey as George and Peppy before arriving at the climactic scene. "The dance is all about their characters," Hazanavicius says. "If it's just a performance, it's not interesting." Bejo's attitude toward the conclusion captures some of the quality that makes her character -- and the film -- so winning. "I kept telling myself: 'Just smile, look at each other, enjoy the moment. The happier you are, the less people will look at your feet. Just act, don't try to be good -- your feet will follow.' Simply to say 'Carolwood' is mind-dazzling," Tony Curtis stated within an interview six several weeks before he died this year, remembering the grandest place he ever resided."At some point, we're likely to live the following,Inch Cher told husband Sonny Bono in 1967 the very first time they visited the Holmby Hillsides estate, noted for the majority of its existence by its address, 141 S. Carolwood Drive. Within the impossibly high-listed realm of L.A. property, an italian man , Renaissance mansion has rated -- in the day it had been built in the height from the Great Depression -- among the area's most coveted houses. PHOTOS: Matthew Perry's Four Large Houses Erected in 1932, the six-bed room house continues to be lived on by twentieth century Fox co-founder Frederick Schenck, Superior Oil founder William Keck, Curtis, Cher and Ghazi Aita, a shadowy businessman who encircled themself with model-actress-whatevers. It's now at the disposal of the widow of Ameriquest founder Roland Arnall, an architect from the subprime mortgage meltdown. "Covering it had been irresistible," states Michael Gross, author of Unreal Estate (Broadway, $30), phone uppermost echelons of L.A. property. (Gross composed a magazine in regards to a famous NY building, 740 Park, in 2005.) Starting with the founding from the communities define the so-known as Platinum Triangular of Holmby Hillsides, Beverly Hillsides and Bel-Air, the writer informs the storyline of fame, wealth and social striving in L.A. with the occupants of 16 from the area's great mansions. One of the amazing houses would be the Knoll in Beverly Hillsides, whose proprietors have incorporated Dino P Laurentiis and Marvin Davis, and Greenacres, built by quiet-film star Harold Lloyd and today the home of billionaire Ron Burkle. But 141 S. Carolwood Drive sticks out because of its famous proprietors as well as their tales of trysts, damaged partnerships, dissolution and predatory capitalism. Created by architect Robert Farquhar (also accountable for Beverly Hillsides Senior High School), it had been commissioned by Florence Quinn, the first kind wife of mall mogul Arthur Letts Sr., the visionary behind the roll-out of Holmby Hillsides. Named after his family's Holmby Lodge in Northamptonshire, England, the city -- created from Letts' acquisition of 3,296 acres in West La -- adopted within the actions of Beverly Hillsides and Bel-Air. As opposed to the second, Holmby Hillsides was founded without limitations on supplying Jews or showbiz types. Carolwood cost $150,000 and was recommended within the La Occasions because the biggest residence built that year. Quinn's red-colored-tile-roofed, L-formed mansion clocked in at 12,000 sq ft (large because of its time, not large by today's McMansion standards) and sitting on four acres of grass, gardens and fountains. A sweeping staircase still rules the huge wood-paneled reception hall. Crooner Rudy Vallee was Quinn's neighbor, and her boy Arthur Letts Junior. resided nearby inside a Medieval-Tudor house now referred to as Playboy Mansion. Within the mid-nineteen forties, it passed with the hands of Hotel Bel-Air founder Frederick Drown, who offered the home to probably the most effective males in Hollywood, movie mogul Schenck. "He furnished it inside a manner referred to as spare -- possibly while he considered the heavens, starlets and Hollywood gamers he filled the area with plenty of decoration," creates Gross from the first leader of U . s . Artists and, later, chairman of twentieth century Fox. Schenck's most famous decoration at Carolwood was Marilyn Monroe. "Though nobody alive know for several, it appears reasonably obvious he started an affair with [her] there," creates Gross. "Based on legend, she spotted him departing the studio in the limousine, exhibited him a sexy smile and also got his card along with a dinner invitation in exchange." She grew to become a normal at his parties, home tests and poker games, standing behind his chair as they performed. Soon, she was residing in the guesthouse. She was 21 and lately have been dropped from her contract at Fox, with merely a couple of small movie roles under her belt. The cigar-chomping Schenck, whose first and just wife was actress Norma Talmadge, was approaching 70. Anthony Summer season referred to him in the 1985 book Goddess: The Key Lives of Marilyn Monroe as "a endured bear of the guy." STORY: Sierra Towers: The Strategies of L.A.'s Strange, Sexy Celebrity Condo Building Although Monroe refused for an interviewer that they and Schenck have been intimate, her biographers describe it as being an affair that placed sex -- "It sometimes required hrs. I had been relieved when he went to sleep," Monroe is stated to possess confided to some friend -- and lengthy-lasting friendship. In 1948, Schenck got Harry Cohn to sign her at Columbia Pictures. Fox wasn't work selection for her Fox co-founder Darryl F. Zanuck dismissively known to Monroe as "Schenck's girl." (Monroe eventually came back to Fox to create About Eve). Schenck offered the home in 1956 to Superior Oil's Keck, who added an inside pool and gold bathroom-sink fittings formed like oil derricks. Curtis purchased ten years later, seven years after his now-classic submit Some Enjoy It Hot. The actor, creates Gross, "did remember Carolwood because he'd dated [Monroe] when she was bunking in [the] guesthouse." The mansion, then worth $300,000, would be a symbol for that actor of finally getting managed to get, buying and selling up through a number of ever-more-impressive houses."During my heart, I had been the Count, which houses grew to become cloaks," Curtis once stated. "After I drawn them on, they grew to become me, not the other way round." He moved along with his second wife, then 21-year-old German actress Christine Kaufmann, whom he met around the group of the 1962 film Taras Bulba, as well as their two youthful kids. At Carolwood, they entertained the kind of Gregory Peck, Roman Polanski and Jean Renoir. But as Kaufmann informs THR, Curtis, who was raised poor within the Bronx, was affected by insecurity: "John Calley once stated in my experience that Tony thought by getting married to me, he could kind of occupy European culture -- it would end up part of him. However it didn't. I don't think his childhood ever left him." Curtis frequently worried the cloak would disappear. "I'm not likely to say Tony didn't understand how to use forks and spoons, but the higher the house, the higher the fear," states Kaufmann. Related Subjects Cher Property 1 2 next last

Mattel buys Hit for $680 mil
Toymaker Mattel Monday announced plans to acquire Hit Ent. for $680 million in cash from U.K. private equity firm Apax Partners. Hit, of the U.K., with annual revenue of about $180 million, owns a premier global portfolio of preschool brands, including Thomas & Friends, Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam and Angelina Ballerina.
El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel is the company behind Barbie, Hot Wheels, American Girl and a wide array of entertainment-inspired toy lines. Speculation about a deal between the two emerged last week. Mattel already has a contract with Hit through 2014 to license certain plastic Thomas products, whose global sales total more than $150 million, the company said. The deal, it said, will allow it continue to expand the products and reunite two key pieces of the Thomas toy lineup, the plastic and die-cast toys with the wood-based business. "Hit Entertainment owns some of the most loved and trusted preschool brands in the world and under Mattel's leadership, I look forward to seeing them grow to even greater heights," said Hit CEO Jeffrey Dunn. "Mattel is a wonderful steward of brands, and a great home for the outstanding properties Hit has developed and grown." The acquisition does not include Hit's interest in the cable network station Sprout. The transaction is expected to be financed with a combination of cash and debt, and is expected to close in the first quarter of 2012. It is not expected to have a material impact on Mattel's 2012 earnings, but is expected to be increasingly accretive as the benefits of owning these brands are reflected in Mattel's results. "Mattel is the right home for Thomas and friends," said Mattel chief executive Robert Eckert. Hit CEO Jeffrey Dunn added: "It is fitting that the world's premier toy company should become the owner of the world's premier pre-school property." Hit, which was created by the late British media entrepreneur Peter Orton in 1989, was bought by Apax for $890 million in 2005. In the succeeding years the children's content business has been buffeted by declining DVD sales and uncertainties over future TV ad revenues. Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com

Nikita's Lyndsy Fonseca on Alex's Predicament and Giving Fans "Olex"
Lyndsy Fonseca, Nikita In Season 2 of Nikita, Alex is working alongside Division - but that does not imply that she and Nikita will stay adversaries. Even when Nikita did break her arm and shoot her within the leg. Bygones! "I believe there is lots of worry this year about 'Oh my God, Alex is turning evil, Alex is around the bad side,' and it is not too whatsoever," Lyndsy Fonseca informs TVGuide.com. "It's type of the unfortunate situation they are in at this time. There's still lots of love, there's still lots of hate. You will find moments within the next couple of episodes where Nikita attempts to help Alex, and there is moments where Alex alerts Nikita about things." VIDEO: Nikita's Devon Sawa: Owen will not get when it comes to "Mikita" Alex also offers more urgent matters on her behalf mind besides Nikita (Maggie Q). Discovering much more about how her parents died has lit Alex's vengeance-seeking fires, as well as in Friday's episode (8/7c around the CW), she takes another calculated step toward claiming back her birthright, her father's company, Zetrov. "She tries to find the spokesperson, the general public figure of Zetrov, from the lead that Amanda has given her," states Fonseca. "She's type of playing a component, pretending to become someone else. It's certainly progress, but regrettably there is a huge consequence to become compensated when she does try to understand this guy." For the time being, Alex is tied to her current allies because she needs the assets that Division offers, even when that needs dealing with Amanda and Percy (Melinda Clarke and Xander Berkeley). Fonseca teases that within an approaching episode, "Amanda does something so terrible to Alex with someone who she really loves and likes you, which it changes the connection together. Due to that, Alex will have to trust Percy a bit more. We are going to determine what that may mean." Photos: Nikita, Hawaii Five- and much more of TV's most sexy crime martial artists Getting belief in Percy, however, is not always probably the most prudent course. Percy, obviously, remains held in a glass-enclosed prison, not too it's stopped the first kind Division boss from making demands and meting out suggestions about Black Box matters. "You won't ever wish to trust Percy. Whenever you do, you realize you are in the finish of the rope," states Fonseca. "After I play Alex, I understand to not trust him. I understand that there are effects to doing stuff that he asks, but it is tough to be five steps in front of Percy. I believe that he's type of building his secret method of breaking out." Read this look of Friday's episode "Knightfall" and Alex's critical decision: And although Nikita fans may relish the show's action and intrigue, additionally they love, well, love. Fonseca knows that fans want Alex to locate romance with Devon Sawa's recurring character, Owen. "The 'Olex' factor is simply shocking and funny in my experience,Inch she states. "I really like that fans are extremely in to the show enough to build up an appreciation interest between two those who have never even met on the program. I do not know if they'll ever meet. Hopefully the authors -- and that i have pointed out it to them also -- provide the fans what they need.Inch Meanwhile, audiences will have to get by with Sean (Dillon Casey), the man sent by Oversight to keep close track of Division. It's really no secret the show's setting him as an intimate interest for Alex, but to date, after being tricked by everybody, she's not feeling generous, a smaller amount romantic. "At first of year, she's just really inflammed with this guy, with many people breathing lower her neck and tugging her in many various ways,Inch Fonseca states. "She does not need someone else declaring that what's right and wrong. And So I think she's a little defensive about him and feels as though he's just there to question who she's in ways that isn't really helping her. There's certainly no liking happening at this time.Inch The entire Nikita Season 2 report: "Mikita" away from home along with a romance for Birkhoff? Ah, but hearts in addition to allegiances can alter, and Alex certainly has proven to become prone to outdoors influence and adjusting to extreme conditions. "I believe the large change is available in Episode 8, but it is a sluggish development," Fonseca states. "They've moments when they're place in existence and dying situations where they are instructed to get together to outlive it. I believe that you'll be able to be amazed by Sean. There's lots of Boy Scout, 'I'm an ideal guy and that i perform the right factor,' black-and-whitened attitude he has that Alex really does not understand or like. He then begins to exhibit that small gray area in the ideas toward Division." Nikita airs on Fridays at 8/7c around the CW. Will Alex ever fully reconcile with Nikita? Do you consider she needs a friend greater than a love interest at this time? Owen or Sean?

Study Sees U.S. Communications Industry Growing 4.1% in 2011
NEW YORK - Despite an economic slowdown, U.S. communications industry spending will grow 4.1 percent this year and increase at a 5.5 percent compound annual growth rate from 2010 to 2015 to $1.41 trillion, Veronis Suhler Stevenson projected on Wednesday. That means that the sector will outperform economic growth over the multi-year time frame driven by digital media growth. However, the latest growth multi-year forecast was weaker than the company's forecast last year for a 6.1 percent CAGR through 2014 to $1.42 trillion. By the end of 2015, the communications industry will now be the eighth-fastest-growing and fourth-largest U.S. economic component, according to the 25th edition of the VSS Communications Industry Forecast 2011-15. The company unveiled its annual forecast later than usual "due to the downturn in key economic indicators in the third quarter of 2011, which led VSS to recalibrate its forecasts to include the most current research and analysis through September." VSS also said it will begin publishing a mid-term forecast update in the first quarter of 2012. Growth over the 2010-2015 period will be driven primarily by "the rapid convergence of computer, Internet and wireless mobile technologies fueling the ongoing transformation of the media landscape and leading to new industries, platforms, channels, and consumer and institutional behaviors," the company said. Indeed, the VSS forecast says that digital media is having "a strong and long-term impact" on the industry. The only segments expected to register declines over the forecast period are newspaper publishing and local consumer directories. Segments that have been hurt in recent years by the migration to digital and economic factors are expected to stabilize though during the forecast period, according to the VSS report. Meanwhile, targeted media is projected to be the fastest-growing industry sector in 2011 and over the 2010-2015 time frame, expanding at a CAGR of 7.9 percent to $272.5 billion in 2015, driven by Internet and mobile services, as well as branded entertainment. The four revenue streams of advertising, marketing services, institutional and consumer end-user spending that VSS tracks will lag GDP growth in 2011, but exceed economic growth over the 2010-2015 period, according to the investment firm. Institutional end-user and advertising revenue will show a strong CAGR of 6.0 percent each over the period. In the institutional end-user segment, TV programming, cable license fees and TV station retransmission fees will grow at a CAGR of 7.5 percent. In advertising, mobile and Internet will drive growth with CAGRs of 42.9 percent and 13.7 percent, respectively. The traditional consumer ad media space, which includes broadcast TV, consumer magazines and broadcast and satellite radio, among others, will generate growth in the forecast period, even though it will trail GDP, "as brand-related digital products and delivery methods gain a stronger foothold for most traditional media outlets," VSS said. "While there are instances of declines and decelerated growth - largely in the more traditional segments of the communications industry - there is a convergence taking place, in which everything digital continues to gain greater influence, scope and relative revenue mix, neutralizing the general decline of traditional media," said John Suhler, co-founder and president of VSS. Time spent with the Internet increased 6.0 percent in 2010 to 397 hours per person, according to VSS. The growth came from consumers spending more time with social media, among other things. Time spent with mobile media in 2010 jumped 49.7 percent to 77 hours per person amid increased smartphone penetration. Given rapid adoption of tablets, VSS projected a 35.3 percent increase in time spent with wireless media in 2011, reaching 104 hours per person. The segment will post a 19.8 percent CAGR over the forecast period, with consumer purchases of more e-books, music, mobile applications and streaming video driving growth, it said. Growth in the entertainment and leisure media sector, traditionally the largest part of the total communications business, will amount to a CAGR of 5.6 percent to hit $355.74 billion in 2015 driven by subscription TV gains at a 7.6 percent CAGR to $235.76 billion. VSS predicted that subscribers would add enhanced services, such as cable modems, to their existing packages. Subscription TV will be the largest consumer media segment in 2011. The CAGR in the traditional consumer ad media sector will be 1.9 percent in the forecast period to hit $160.21 billion in 2015. Advertising revenue growth of 2.5 percent in 2011 to $188.16 billion and a 6.0 percent CAGR to $245.29 billion will also boost results. Broadcast TV will remain the largest advertising segment, while pure-play mobile advertising spending will be the fastest growing segment, according to VSS. Within the overall broadcast TV segment, VSS expects total spending will fall 0.6 percent to $47.18 billion in 2011, with the 2010-2015 CAGR hitting 3.9 percent though to reach $57.37 billion in 2015, driven by retransmission fees.
